Do you need a permit for your sign?

In most cases, yes. In the UAE, outdoor signs and advertisements that face a public road or are on a building facade need approval from the relevant authority before they are installed. Signs inside a mall or a private building usually need only the landlord's or mall management's approval, but outdoor shopfront, rooftop, pylon and billboard signs normally need an official permit.

Installing a sign without approval can lead to fines and removal of the sign at the owner's cost, so it is worth getting the permit right before production starts.

Signage permits in Abu Dhabi

In Abu Dhabi, advertising and signboard permits are handled by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), and applications are made through the government's TAMM services platform. Requirements can differ between Abu Dhabi city, Al Ain and Al Dhafra, and between ordinary streets and areas managed by a master developer.

Applications usually need your trade licence, a no-objection letter from the building owner or landlord, and drawings or a visual of the sign showing its size, position on the building and materials. Large rooftop signs, pylons and structures may also need structural drawings. Fees and processing times depend on the sign type, size and location, so always check the current requirements on TAMM before you apply.

Signage permits in Dubai

Dubai's rules for advertisements are set out in Decree No. 6 of 2020, which requires businesses to display a sign showing their trade name and activity and bans displaying advertisements without a permit. Different authorities approve different locations: the Department of Economy and Tourism for commercial outlet facades and commercial centres, Dubai Municipality for vacant land, building and open areas, the RTA for roads and vehicles, and free zone or development authorities for signs inside their zones.

Dubai also requires Arabic to be the main language on the sign, taking at least half of the sign area and placed at the top or on the right, with no spelling or grammar mistakes. Permits are typically linked to the landlord's no-objection certificate and renewed at least once a year.

Documents to prepare

Whichever emirate you are in, prepare these before you apply: a valid trade licence; a no-objection letter from the landlord, mall or master developer; a design of the sign showing the exact wording in Arabic and English; elevation drawings showing where the sign sits on the building, with dimensions; and, for large or rooftop signs, structural details.

Having these ready, and getting the Arabic text professionally checked, avoids the most common reason for rejection and resubmission.

Common mistakes that delay approval

The most frequent problems are Arabic text that is too small, misspelt or wrongly placed; signs larger than the landlord or authority allows; missing landlord approval; and drawings that do not show the sign on the real building. Another common mistake is producing the sign before approval, then having to change it.

We prepare permit-ready drawings and visuals with every shop signboard, rooftop sign and pylon sign we quote, and adjust them if the landlord or authority asks for changes.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a signage permit take?

It depends on the emirate, the sign type and whether the documents are complete. Simple shop signs can be approved quickly, while rooftop signs and large structures take longer. Check the current timeline with the authority when you apply.

Does my sign need Arabic text?

In Dubai, Arabic must be the main language and take at least 50% of the sign. Abu Dhabi also expects Arabic on business signs. Check the exact rule for your location before finalising the design.
